Longrow Red Set (4 Bottles) @ R11,900
**Longrow Red 13 Year – Malbec Cask Finish (51.3%)
A 13 year old Campbeltown single malt from the Springbank distillery, released under the Longrow name – so expect a good kick of peat with this one! For this release, the whisky was finished in Malbec casks for 15 months after 12 years in bourbon casks.
Nose: A very coastal beginning; sea salt with a fresh breeze, then becomes fruity; sweet cocktail cherries, blackberries and red currants. A faint and subtle note of cigar boxes and tobacco comes through.
Palate: The fruitiness continues with rhubarb crumble, stewed apples and juicy plums. Current ham follows with a very soft and delicate touch of peat with more coastal sea salt notes.
Finish: Red wine tannins dominate, combined with smouldering campfire smoke and the ever present fresh fruit notes of prunes and cherries.
**Longrow Red 11 Year – Cabernet Franc Cask Finish (55.9%)
In early 2018, Springbank added another release to their incredibly popular Longrow Red series! This time, the 11 year old, heavily peated Campbeltown single malt was initially matured in bourbon barrels for 9 years before being moved over to casks that previously aged Cabernet Franc wine. Past Longrow Red bottlings have enjoyed maturations in Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Port, Pinot |Noir and even Australian Shiraz casks!
Nose: Raspberry and blueberry, joined by a hearty blast of earthy peat smoke.
Palate: Toasted vanilla pod, petrichor, jammy strawberries with a zesty hint of orange peel, continuing muscular peat notes.
Finish: A final waft of dense smoke lingers for ages on the finish.
**Longrow 13 Year Old – Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon Cask Matured (51.6%)
Nose: Roasted oak and simmered fruit, followed by boozy red wine richness and some festive spice.
Palate: Powerful cherry and blackcurrant, with a touch of jamminess to it. Smoke stands up to the sweetness, giving it a savoury, almost salty edge.
Finish: It goes on and on, with dark chocolate, rootsy herbs and a hint of tobacco.
**Longrow Red 11 Year Old – Pinot Noir Cask Finish (53.1%)
Another edition of Longrow Red single malt Scotch whisky from the Springbank distillery in Campbeltown! This time, the heavily peated whisky was firstly matured in bourbon casks before being moved over to Pinot Noir barriques from New Zealand for a three year finishing period. The balance of peat and wine sweetness is always a highlight for these bottlings.
Nose: Heavy on the boozy fruit notes on the nose, with raspberry and plum playing major roles. A light touch of tobacco hints at the peat underneath.
Palate: Cherry and chocolate arrive first, before the peat smoke starts to pick up speed. Earthy, vegetal elements grow and grow.
Finish: Baked earth, chocolate croissant and a touch of dried fruit.
