Nose: This opens with an array of fruity top notes, especially pear, yellow melon, and unripe banana. A toasty woody note adds complexity, coupled with old leather and orange oil furniture polish. Add a splash of water and it turns darker and a little more savoury.
Palate: Cream soda notes, deepened by walnut, multigrain toast and peppery vanilla pods. Those orchard fruits do waft through, but this is a more savoury dram than you might expect. It’s got a medium body and feels slightly drying.
Finish: Long, and sweet-chilli led, punctuated by more of those orchard fruits.
Overall: An elegant, intentional dram that develops richer, woodier and more savoury elements in the glass.

A 20 year old Cragganmore here, released as part of Diageo’s always anticipated Special Releases. For the 2020 Special Releases, a wonderfully laid-back Cragganmore has been selected, matured in a combo of refill casks and new fresh-charred casks. Expect plenty of vanilla and pear, along with a few flashes of pecan and buttered toast.
